I Know What Boys Like

I’ve been getting some great presents this week. My sister and her munchkins made me a Christmas in July package that included my favourite perfume, scented potpourri and candles, and a precious necklace from my darling nephew with seashells and pearls. My other sister sent me a just because package that had a good book and this FABOO…thing.
A hamster, in black leather with wild red hair, that dances and sings “I know what boys like” by the Waitresses. She got it ages ago, but her little boy was crazy for it, so she had to wait until he got bored. Now it’s on MY desk, singing and dancing away, and I’m laughing my ass off. Wild red hair, black clothes, and teasing Eighties pop music. HEY! Wait a minute…is she implying that I…???? LOL!!!

I’ve discovered a whole world that I really didn’t know about in these last few days. A sweet little friend of mine let me peek into her private garden of people who are Little Girls at heart. Little Girls as I remember them, sweet and pretty and not obsessed with being grown up. Girls who like dresses and playing with dolls, hopscotch and jumprope and holding hands on the swings.

I’ll admit, I was a tomboy, I liked to climb trees and play kickball with the boys, my dad was our softball coach. but the trees were also our Houses, where my sister and I would be Ladies and play with our dolls. But we dressed up on holidays, and for church and school pictures, we also played hopscotch and had our jumpropes. Loved the swings and the merry go round at the park. And as much as we fought, I honestly thought that girls should be nice to each other. It hurt me when they weren’t, and to be honest, it still does.

So, I can empathize with having a Little Girl inside who still wants to play somewhere that is safe from all the violence and fear in the world. Who wants to dress like a princess and fly with magic fairy wings, to dress her doll and have a grand birthday party with all her friends. You are very courageous Little Girls and I hope you continue to have your magical weekends.

Miss Tara, thank you so much for your kind words about the little girls. I think my childhood would have been much happier if I could have been a lady and played with pretty dolls sometimes. And I would have loved to dress up for holidays.

I agree that girls should be nice to each other, and I try very hard to do that when I’m dressed as a girl.

I love that song by the Waitresses – that lady was such a tease.
